How suppliers win UK public contract renewals before they are advertised
UK public sector contract renewals are typically won three to six months before the existing contract ends — long before the formal notice appears. The suppliers who win them are not the ones who respond fastest to an advertisement; they are the ones who already knew the contract's expiry date and had a position ready.
The four-step approach
- Map the expiry dates in your trade. Every awarded UK public contract carries a published end date. Filter to the trades you actually serve, then to contracts expiring in the next 90 to 180 days.
- Identify the incumbent. Knowing who currently holds the contract tells you who you are displacing, what the buyer is used to, and where the incumbent is likely vulnerable.
- Size the opportunity. The award value separates a contract worth pursuing from one that will not cover the cost of bidding.
- Build the position early. Engage through the buyer's proper channels well before the notice drops, with a proposition shaped around what the incumbent is not delivering.
Why most suppliers miss the window
Most suppliers monitor advertisements rather than expiry dates. An advertisement is published when the buyer is ready to buy — by which point the requirement is often already scoped around the incumbent, and the shortlist is sometimes effectively formed. The expiry date is visible months earlier, in the public data, to anyone watching for it.
The role of forward-looking data
ER Monarch extracts every award from the official Contracts Finder OCDS feed whose end date falls inside an 18-month forward window, names the incumbent, and sorts by earliest expiry. It currently tracks 386 live renewals across 31 trade categories, with 122 contracts inside the 90 to 180 day Active Bid Runway.
What this is not
This is not a contact list and contains no personal data. It is a timing tool. The buyer's identity is public, and any supplier can reach a public body through its published procurement channels.
